Submitting to Westerly

Editorial Policy

Westerly publishes lively fiction and poetry as well as intelligent articles. Westerly is not a specialist academic journal but aims to generate interest in the literature and culture of Australia and its neighbouring regions.

Submitting material

Westerly is published annually in November. Submissions of previously unpublished material may be sent to the address on the title page, accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed business sized envelope. [Alternatively, you may send an International Reply Paid Coupon. Please do not send cash]. Submissions may also be made via email to the address listed below (Word document).

Correspondence should be addressed to the Editors, Westerly, M202, The University of Western Australia, Crawley, Western Australia 6009 (phone: (08) 6488 2101, fax: (08) 6488 1030); email: westerly@cyllene.uwa.edu.au (replies may only be made for acceptances).

Unsolicited manuscripts not accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope will not be returned. Contributors note: no more than three poems or one short story [two if quite short - suggested maximum word length 5000 words] should be submitted, and will be considered, at any one time. All manuscripts must show the name and address of the sender and should be typed (double-spaced) on one side of the paper only. Please wait for a response before forwarding any additional submissions for consideration.

Please ensure that all titles/headings/textual breaks are clearly marked. While every care is taken of manuscripts, the editors can take no final responsibility for their return; contributors are consequently urged to retain copies of all work submitted.

Contributors to Westerly are advised that the submission deadline for inclusion in the journal issue for that year is June 30. Material received after that date may be held over for possible inclusion in the following year's issue.

Payment

We are bound by our funding arrangement with the ArtsWA to pay the minimum set fees which are: poems Aust$50.00; stories/articles Aust$120.00.

Publication delays

It can take up to four months from submission date before a decision is given on work. This is because work is read by a number of people. After acceptance, it can take a further three to six months before it appears in print. Westerly is an annual journal, appearing in late November.

Type of fiction

We have no rules as to type of fiction we publish.

New writers

We are very keen to publish new writers, but quality of material is our major concern, therefore if new work is good enough we will publish it.

Funding

Westerly is funded by ArtsWA.

Westerly publishes about 1% of the poetry received, with the percentage for fiction a little higher.

We differ from other journals in that our focus is more towards the West Coast of Australia and the Indian Ocean region (Asia, India etc).
