The Westerly Centre Guidelines

The Westerly Centre was opened in 1982 and operates within the School of Cultural Studies at UWA. Its aim is to stimulate and coordinate research and publication in Australian literature. The Centre's membership includes scholars, writers and readers in Australia and overseas who have an interest in Australian literature and culture. Associate membership is open to anyone who agrees with the aims of the Centre and wishes to remain informed of its operations. Members receive an annual bulletin and discounts on publications.

The Westerly Centre is run by a Committee chaired by a Director; the present Director is Dr Kieran Dolin. Apart from its general interest in Australian literature and culture, it is the leading research centre in the world on links between Australian and Asian literary cultures.

The Westerly Centre engages in a range of activities. As well as publishing the annual literary magazine Westerly, it produces up to two books of literature or literary scholarship annually, and by now it has an impressive publications list. The chief criterion for publication is that the Westerly Centre books will advance knowledge and understanding of Australian literature (broadly defined). The Westerly Centre also organises conferences and seminars in the field of Australian literature. Examples of these are the biannual Symposium on the Literature of the Asia-Pacific Region, which has been held four times by the Westerly Centre at UWA; two Australian Studies Seminars held at York; the annual conference of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature which has been held three times at UWA; and numerous seminars for Western Australian high school teachers. The Westerly Centre hosts visitors from Europe, the UK, the USA and Asia, and has good contacts with other Australian Literature study centres in Australian and overseas.
